You work under a licensed electrician and your hours are logged toward your own license. The first stretch is bending and pulling: conduit, wire, boxes, fixtures, and learning to make up a panel neatly enough that the next person can read it. You will be told to do things a specific way long before you are told why, and the why arrives in the classroom half, which most shops either run or pay for. The state sets how many apprentices one licensed electrician can supervise, so a shop taking you on is committing real capacity to training you. Pay steps up as hours accumulate. At the end you sit for the journeyman exam, and that license is the thing that makes you employable anywhere.
Starting out in Tampa that is $34K-50K, and journeyman runs $62K-88K. These are Tampa market ranges, not a guarantee: where you land depends on your experience and the shop.
Electrical runs apprentice, journeyman, master. You log hours under a licensed electrician, do the classroom half, and sit the journeyman exam, which is what lets you work unsupervised. IBEW JATC and non-union shop programmes reach it on similar timelines; the wage schedule differs.
You do not need a license to start. Florida licenses contractors, not employee electricians.
Tampa electrical carries the problems of an older coastal city. Large parts of South Tampa, Seminole Heights and older St. Petersburg were wired for a fraction of the load a modern household draws, so panel upgrades, service changes and rewiring are a routine line of work rather than an occasional job. Salt air corrodes outdoor equipment, meters and service entrances on a timeline inland electricians do not plan for. Hurricane season adds a surge of damage assessment, service restoration and generator work that reorders the calendar, and standby generator installation has become steady work in its own right for the same reason. Florida licenses electrical contractors rather than every employee electrician, so you can start without a card and learn on the job. Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Brandon draw on a single labour pool, and the drive across the bay is the constraint most people underestimate when they take a job.
