You run service calls out of a stocked van, most days six to nine stops. The work is drains, leaks, water heaters, fixtures, and the occasional emergency that reorders your whole afternoon. You are using a camera and a locator to find what you cannot see, running a sewer machine, cutting into walls carefully enough that the repair is not the expensive part. Diagnosis is most of it: water shows up a long way from where it escaped. You quote in front of the customer and often do the repair on the spot, so being able to explain what failed and what it costs is part of the job. Service is the customer-facing half of plumbing and the half most shops are shortest on.

San Antonio plumbing is steadier and less boom-driven than Dallas or Austin, and for a lot of people that is the appeal. The military installations across the city and the medical centre complex generate consistent institutional and commercial work that does not swing with the housing cycle, and residential service runs year-round on hard water that is tough on water heaters and fixtures. Growth is real but paced, spreading out through New Braunfels, Schertz and Converse rather than exploding. Texas licenses individual plumbers through the TSBPE rather than only contractors, so you register as an apprentice on day one and the shop sponsors your hours from the start. That matters more than it sounds: your hours are documented and portable, and a licence at the end of them is worth the same in Houston or Dallas if you ever move. Cost of living here is lower than the other Texas metros, which changes what a given wage actually buys.
