You run service calls rather than pulling wire on a new build. A day is troubleshooting: a dead circuit, a breaker that keeps tripping, a panel that needs replacing, a GFCI nobody can find. You are working with a meter and sometimes a megger, reading what a previous electrician did and figuring out where it went wrong. The code is not optional and the inspector is not negotiable, so knowing the NEC is doing the job rather than passing a test. Some days are residential and small; some are commercial, where a fault takes down equipment somebody is losing money on every minute. Service work is diagnostic before it is physical, which is why shops promote their sharpest people into it.

The military installations across the city and the medical centre complex generate steady commercial and industrial electrical work on maintenance and upgrade cycles that do not track the housing market, and that stability is the reason a lot of electricians here stay put. Residential and light commercial growth continues at a measured pace through New Braunfels, Schertz and Converse. Texas registers electricians individually through the TDLR rather than only licensing contractors: you register as an apprentice on day one and the shop sponsors your hours from your first week, so your time is documented from the start and counts toward a licence that is good anywhere in Texas. Cost of living is materially lower than Dallas, Houston or Austin, which means a given hourly rate goes considerably further here than the same number would three hours north.
