You work under a licensed plumber and every hour is logged toward your own license. The state sets the ratio, so you are never sent out alone before you have the hours behind you. The early months are carrying, digging, cutting, threading, and holding the other end while you learn what everything is called and why it goes in that order. Gradually the work is handed over, starting with what cannot be expensive to get wrong. Most shops pair the hours with classroom time, at a local program or through the shop, and many pay for it. The wage ladder moves with hours logged, not with how long you have been around. It is a multi-year path, and what you hold at the end travels with you.
Starting out in Phoenix that is $38K-52K, and journeyman runs $62K-82K. These are Phoenix market ranges, not a guarantee: where you land depends on your experience and the shop.
Plumbing is licence-gated and the licence is the point. Log hours as an apprentice, sit the journeyman exam, then qualify later for a master licence that lets you pull permits. Each step changes what you may legally do unsupervised, which is why the pay steps are so sharp.
You do not need a license to start. Arizona licenses contractors, not employee plumbers.
Phoenix plumbing is a hard-water, slab-on-grade market, and both of those decide what your days look like. Valley water is mineral-heavy enough that water heaters, fixtures and treatment equipment wear out faster than they would elsewhere, so replacement and softener work is a steady baseline rather than a seasonal spike. Almost everything is built on slab, which means a leak under the concrete is a locate-and-open job rather than a crawlspace job, and getting good at acoustic and pressure locating is worth real money here. On top of that sits relentless new construction pushing out through Mesa, Glendale, Chandler and the west valley, which keeps rough-in crews busy year-round in a climate that never shuts a jobsite for weather. Arizona licenses plumbing contractors rather than employee plumbers, so you can start without a card. UA Local 469 covers the Valley if you want the union route; plenty of the market is open shop.
