You work under a licensed tech and every hour counts toward your own credentials. Early on you are carrying equipment, pulling old units, running duct, and handing over tools while watching closely. The learning is deliberate: brazing, evacuating a system, charging it correctly, commissioning a new install and understanding why each step is in that order. Most shops get you EPA 608 early because you cannot touch refrigerant without it, and many pay for the test. You will spend the first stretch on installs, because an installation shows you how a system is supposed to be before you are asked to work out why one is not. Pay moves on skill rather than tenure. Nobody sends you out alone until you are ready, and that is a protection, not a limit.

HVAC has no single licence gate. You move up on demonstrated skill: EPA 608 to touch refrigerant, then NATE or manufacturer certifications that shops price into your rate. In Phoenix, air conditioning is not comfort, it is life safety, and that changes the job. When a system fails in July at 115 degrees the call is urgent in a way it never is in a mild climate, and shops staff and pay accordingly. Most residential equipment here is a rooftop package unit rather than a split system, so you are working on a roof in extreme heat, and the season runs far longer than a northern tech would expect. Equipment life is short because it runs almost continuously for half the year, which keeps replacement volume high alongside repair. The Valley's growth through Mesa, Chandler, Glendale and the west side adds new install work on top. EPA 608 is what you need to touch refrigerant, and shops will usually certify you if you are not already. Arizona licenses HVAC contractors rather than individual technicians, so the ceiling here is set by what you can diagnose.
