You run service calls rather than pulling wire on a new build. A day is troubleshooting: a dead circuit, a breaker that keeps tripping, a panel that needs replacing, a GFCI nobody can find. You are working with a meter and sometimes a megger, reading what a previous electrician did and figuring out where it went wrong. The code is not optional and the inspector is not negotiable, so knowing the NEC is doing the job rather than passing a test. Some days are residential and small; some are commercial, where a fault takes down equipment somebody is losing money on every minute. Service work is diagnostic before it is physical, which is why shops promote their sharpest people into it.
Starting out in Phoenix that is $38K-52K, and journeyman runs $65K-90K. These are Phoenix market ranges, not a guarantee: where you land depends on your experience and the shop.
Electrical runs apprentice, journeyman, master. You log hours under a licensed electrician, do the classroom half, and sit the journeyman exam, which is what lets you work unsupervised. IBEW JATC and non-union shop programmes reach it on similar timelines; the wage schedule differs.
You do not need a license to start. Arizona licenses contractors, not employee electricians.
Phoenix has become a semiconductor town, and for electricians that changes everything. Large fabrication plants in the north Valley and in Chandler need industrial electrical work at a scale and standard the region has not seen before, and they have pulled experienced people out of commercial and residential work to get it. What is left behind is a shortage that residential and light commercial shops fill by training people who show up. The rest of the market is ordinary fast-growth work: new subdivisions through Mesa, Glendale and the west valley, plus service on housing stock that has expanded relentlessly for thirty years. Heat is a working condition, not a footnote, when you are in an attic in July. Arizona licenses electrical contractors rather than employee electricians, so you can start without a card. IBEW Local 640 covers the Valley if you want the union route; a large share of the market is open shop.
