You work under a licensed tech and every hour counts toward your own credentials. Early on you are carrying equipment, pulling old units, running duct, and handing over tools while watching closely. The learning is deliberate: brazing, evacuating a system, charging it correctly, commissioning a new install and understanding why each step is in that order. Most shops get you EPA 608 early because you cannot touch refrigerant without it, and many pay for the test. You will spend the first stretch on installs, because an installation shows you how a system is supposed to be before you are asked to work out why one is not. Pay moves on skill rather than tenure. Nobody sends you out alone until you are ready, and that is a protection, not a limit.

HVAC has no single licence gate. You move up on demonstrated skill: EPA 608 to touch refrigerant, then NATE or manufacturer certifications that shops price into your rate. Orlando HVAC is a year-round cooling market driven by construction and hospitality rather than by retrofit. The metro has grown for years, and subdivisions around Kissimmee and Sanford keep install crews busy on new equipment rather than nursing old systems along. The tourism corridor is the other half and it is a genuinely different job: hotels and resorts run large commercial cooling that cannot be taken down while guests are in the building, so service happens overnight and on schedules set by someone else's occupancy. Humidity means dehumidification matters as much as temperature, and a system that gets that wrong generates complaints rather than comfort. Inland Orlando escapes the salt corrosion that shortens equipment life on the coast. EPA 608 covers refrigerant handling and shops will certify you. Florida licenses HVAC contractors rather than individual technicians, so what limits you is skill. Winter Park and the older inner suburbs carry the retrofit work.
