You work under a licensed tech and every hour counts toward your own credentials. Early on you are carrying equipment, pulling old units, running duct, and handing over tools while watching closely. The learning is deliberate: brazing, evacuating a system, charging it correctly, commissioning a new install and understanding why each step is in that order. Most shops get you EPA 608 early because you cannot touch refrigerant without it, and many pay for the test. You will spend the first stretch on installs, because an installation shows you how a system is supposed to be before you are asked to work out why one is not. Pay moves on skill rather than tenure. Nobody sends you out alone until you are ready, and that is a protection, not a limit.
Starting out in Las Vegas that is $44K-56K, and service tech runs $56K-75K. These are Las Vegas market ranges, not a guarantee: where you land depends on your experience and the shop.
HVAC has no single licence gate. You move up on demonstrated skill: EPA 608 to touch refrigerant, then NATE or manufacturer certifications that shops price into your rate. Install first, then service once you can diagnose unsupervised, then lead tech. Commercial and refrigeration pay more and ask more.

Las Vegas HVAC is an extreme-heat market with a hospitality layer on top. Residential cooling runs under desert load for months, equipment lives short lives, and a failure in July is an emergency rather than an inconvenience. Most homes run rooftop package units, so the work is done on a roof in serious heat, and the season is long enough that overtime is a structural part of the pay rather than an occasional bonus. What makes the city unusual is the resort corridor: hotels and casinos run chillers and air handling at a scale few metros match, on systems that cannot go down during business hours, so commercial service here means night work and tight windows. Henderson and North Las Vegas are ordinary growing suburbs by comparison. EPA 608 covers refrigerant and shops will certify you. Nevada licenses HVAC contractors rather than individual technicians, and the compact metro keeps commutes shorter than Phoenix.
