You run service calls rather than pulling wire on a new build. A day is troubleshooting: a dead circuit, a breaker that keeps tripping, a panel that needs replacing, a GFCI nobody can find. You are working with a meter and sometimes a megger, reading what a previous electrician did and figuring out where it went wrong. The code is not optional and the inspector is not negotiable, so knowing the NEC is doing the job rather than passing a test. Some days are residential and small; some are commercial, where a fault takes down equipment somebody is losing money on every minute. Service work is diagnostic before it is physical, which is why shops promote their sharpest people into it.
Starting out in Houston that is $40K-58K, and journeyman runs $62K-88K. These are Houston market ranges, not a guarantee: where you land depends on your experience and the shop.
Electrical runs apprentice, journeyman, master. You log hours under a licensed electrician, do the classroom half, and sit the journeyman exam, which is what lets you work unsupervised. IBEW JATC and non-union shop programmes reach it on similar timelines; the wage schedule differs.

Houston electrical has an industrial spine that most metros lack. The petrochemical corridor east of the city runs continuous demand for industrial electrical work, and it pays for the skills and the safety standards that come with it. That pulls experienced people out of the commercial and residential pool and leaves ordinary shops short. Storm and flood damage adds a recurring stream of service, panel replacement and rewiring that a drier city never generates. Texas registers electricians individually through the TDLR rather than licensing only contractors: you register as an apprentice on day one and the shop sponsors your hours from your first week. That is a meaningful advantage over a contractor-only state, because your time is documented and it belongs to you. IBEW Local 716 covers the area for the union route. Houston, Pasadena, Sugar Land, Katy and Baytown all support their own shops and the metro is large enough that commute range filters who will hire you.
