You run service calls out of a stocked van, most days six to nine stops. The work is drains, leaks, water heaters, fixtures, and the occasional emergency that reorders your whole afternoon. You are using a camera and a locator to find what you cannot see, running a sewer machine, cutting into walls carefully enough that the repair is not the expensive part. Diagnosis is most of it: water shows up a long way from where it escaped. You quote in front of the customer and often do the repair on the spot, so being able to explain what failed and what it costs is part of the job. Service is the customer-facing half of plumbing and the half most shops are shortest on.

Plumbing is licence-gated and the licence is the point. Log hours as an apprentice, sit the journeyman exam, then qualify later for a master licence that lets you pull permits. Each step changes what you may legally do unsupervised, which is why the pay steps are so sharp.

Charlotte plumbing is a growth market rather than a repair market. The metro has been adding people and rooftops for two decades on the back of the banking sector, and that shows up as new residential construction spreading through Concord, Huntersville and the surrounding towns, plus commercial fit-out following the office and data-centre build-out. Rough-in and new-install work is a bigger share of the day here than in an older city, which means production speed, print reading and hitting a general contractor's schedule matter as much as diagnostic skill. Older service work concentrates in the core neighbourhoods. North Carolina licenses plumbing contractors rather than employee plumbers, so there is no card standing between you and a first job, and shops that want to keep people are the ones that train. Gastonia and the outer towns run their own shops, and the metro is compact enough that commute is less of a hiring filter than in Atlanta or Dallas.
