You run service calls out of a stocked van, most days six to nine stops. The work is drains, leaks, water heaters, fixtures, and the occasional emergency that reorders your whole afternoon. You are using a camera and a locator to find what you cannot see, running a sewer machine, cutting into walls carefully enough that the repair is not the expensive part. Diagnosis is most of it: water shows up a long way from where it escaped. You quote in front of the customer and often do the repair on the spot, so being able to explain what failed and what it costs is part of the job. Service is the customer-facing half of plumbing and the half most shops are shortest on.
Starting out in Bay Area that is $45K-65K, and journeyman runs $95K-130K. These are Bay Area market ranges, not a guarantee: where you land depends on your experience and the shop.
Plumbing is licence-gated and the licence is the point. Log hours as an apprentice, sit the journeyman exam, then qualify later for a master licence that lets you pull permits. Each step changes what you may legally do unsupervised, which is why the pay steps are so sharp.
You do not need a license to start. California licenses contractors (C-36), not employee plumbers.
Bay Area plumbing pays more than almost anywhere in the country, and the reasons are the same reasons it is hard. The housing stock in San Francisco and older Oakland is a century old in places, so you are working on galvanised, on cast iron, and on systems that have been modified by five generations of plumbers with varying levels of care. Seismic requirements shape how things are strapped and supported in ways they are not elsewhere. California licenses contractors under a C-36 rather than licensing every employee plumber, so you can start without a card, but the union presence is strong and it matters: UA Local 38 in San Francisco, 342 in Contra Costa, 393 in San Jose and 467 on the Peninsula each run their own jurisdictions and wage schedules. Prevailing-wage public work is a meaningful share of the market. Oakland, San Jose, San Francisco, Fremont and Concord are effectively separate labour markets, and the bridge you live on the wrong side of costs you an hour a day.
