You run service calls rather than pulling wire on a new build. A day is troubleshooting: a dead circuit, a breaker that keeps tripping, a panel that needs replacing, a GFCI nobody can find. You are working with a meter and sometimes a megger, reading what a previous electrician did and figuring out where it went wrong. The code is not optional and the inspector is not negotiable, so knowing the NEC is doing the job rather than passing a test. Some days are residential and small; some are commercial, where a fault takes down equipment somebody is losing money on every minute. Service work is diagnostic before it is physical, which is why shops promote their sharpest people into it.
Starting out in Bay Area that is $45K-68K, and journeyman runs $85K-125K. These are Bay Area market ranges, not a guarantee: where you land depends on your experience and the shop.
Electrical runs apprentice, journeyman, master. You log hours under a licensed electrician, do the classroom half, and sit the journeyman exam, which is what lets you work unsupervised. IBEW JATC and non-union shop programmes reach it on similar timelines; the wage schedule differs.
CA ECT. State certification, many shops hire trainees and sponsor it.
Bay Area electrical pays the best rates in the country and asks for the most in return. The work is unusually weighted toward commercial and institutional: data centres, labs, hospitals and tech campuses run electrical systems at a scale and standard that rewards experience heavily. California's electrification and solar requirements push panel upgrades, EV infrastructure and storage into residential work that would be ordinary service elsewhere. Seismic requirements and Title 24 energy code shape installation in ways that surprise people arriving from other states, and inspection is genuinely rigorous. California is one of the states that certifies individual electricians rather than only contractors: you work as a trainee, log hours, and sit for state certification, and many shops sponsor that. That is a real advantage, because your progress is documented rather than depending on a reference. Oakland, San Jose, San Francisco, Fremont and Concord function as separate hiring markets.
