Service plumber in Atlanta

What this job actually is

You run service calls out of a stocked van, most days six to nine stops. The work is drains, leaks, water heaters, fixtures, and the occasional emergency that reorders your whole afternoon. You are using a camera and a locator to find what you cannot see, running a sewer machine, cutting into walls carefully enough that the repair is not the expensive part. Diagnosis is most of it: water shows up a long way from where it escaped. You quote in front of the customer and often do the repair on the spot, so being able to explain what failed and what it costs is part of the job. Service is the customer-facing half of plumbing and the half most shops are shortest on.

What it pays in Atlanta

Starting out in Atlanta that is $35K-50K, and journeyman runs $62K-86K. These are Atlanta market ranges, not a guarantee: where you land depends on your experience and the shop.

How you move up in Plumbing

Plumbing is licence-gated and the licence is the point. Log hours as an apprentice, sit the journeyman exam, then qualify later for a master licence that lets you pull permits. Each step changes what you may legally do unsupervised, which is why the pay steps are so sharp.

Licensing in GA

Apprentice first. No license to start, Georgia requires one to work unsupervised.

The plumbing market in Atlanta

Georgia is one of the stricter states for plumbers, and in Atlanta that shapes who gets hired. The state requires a licence to work unsupervised, which means shops cannot simply put a warm body on a truck, and it is exactly why the good ones sponsor apprentices and log the hours properly. That makes an Atlanta plumbing apprenticeship worth more than the same title in a state that licenses only contractors. The work splits between steady service across the older intown neighbourhoods and new construction chasing the metro's sprawl outward. Atlanta is geographically enormous and traffic is the tax on everything, so a shop's service area matters more here than in a compact metro; a job in Lawrenceville is a different life from a job in Decatur even at the same wage. Marietta, Decatur, Sandy Springs and Lawrenceville all carry their own shops rather than feeding a single downtown core.
